Question

  • Is the Minister "putting the entire burden of safety on parents" when it comes to corded blinds in New Zealand?

Answered by

Hon Scott Simpson

Member for Coromandel · National Party · Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs

Answer

I do not accept that characterisation. Product Safety New Zealand publishes guidance for suppliers and households, including choosing cordless products where possible and using tension devices or other measures to prevent accessible loops. This guidance is intended to reduce the safety risk of corded window coverings. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment also partners with Safekids Aotearoa to raise awareness through family video stories, awareness reminders and tension device installation guides promoted across digital channels and through community outreach.
