Have Kāinga Ora staff advised tenants at risk of eviction that if they gave 21-days notice to end their tenancy that Kāinga Ora would assist them to find alternative housing and if so, were tenants advised that the alternative housing would be transitional housing?

Answer
Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that a Kāinga Ora tenant may give 21 days written notice to end their tenancy at any time. In situations where Kāinga Ora has taken a tenant to the Tenancy Tribunal to seek termination of a tenancy under the Residential Tenancies Act, advice may be provided to that tenant as to the process and potential housing options should the Tribunal's determination be to end the tenancy. Where the Tribunal issues a termination notice, ending the tenancy, a letter is sent to the tenant advising next steps and dates. The advice provided to tenants may include information about what options are available to them in their specific circumstances, such as other local housing providers, or refer them to the Ministry of Social Development. It is not possible to provide the information about the number of tenants who have provided written notice 21 day's notice to end their tenancy without reviewing individual tenancy files. In accordance with Speaker’s Ruling 210/6, I consider that the time and expense of answering the Member’s question is not in the public interest. This is also my response to Written Parliamentary Questions 372292 - 37296 (2026).
