Why did the Minister not highlight in his press release of 30 June 2026 the information in the Cabinet Paper, published on 1 July 2026, that concluded "While MBIE, and other organisations, have undertaken education campaigns to encourage safer consumer behaviour there is little evidence these campaigns have been effective, as evidenced by a further child death in January 2024 and seven ACC claims"?

Answer

The press release announced the Government’s decision to introduce mandatory safety standards for corded window coverings. The Cabinet paper sets out the policy analysis underpinning that decision, including why regulatory action is needed. The Government is acting to better protect young children by requiring safer products to be sold in New Zealand.
