Answer

The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986 continue to provide important protections for New Zealand consumers, including in relation to online and any business trading in New Zealand. The Government recognises that the rapid growth of large online platforms and offshore digital retailers presents new challenges for consumer protection and enforcement. In November 2025, Hon Nicola Willis and Hon Scott Simpson announced changes to increase maximum penalties for breaches of the Fair Trading Act and to support keeping product safety standards up to date.
