Question

  • What alternative mechanisms, if any, will the Government use to identify excessive road cone use or temporary traffic management concerns now that the Road Cone Digital Hotline has been discontinued?

Answer

The road cone hotline pilot confirmed that the key to reducing excessive road cone use is to ensure RCAs adopt the new risk-based, proportionate New Zealand Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (NZGTTM). Closure of the hotline coincided with the deadline for RCAs to submit a plan to NZTA showing how they plan to transition to the NZGTTM, with expectation for adoption by July 2026. Ongoing engagement with PCBUs, NZTA and RCAs will also help to maintain clarity about the respective roles and responsibilities of WorkSafe New Zealand and others in relation to temporary traffic management.
