Does the Minister consider the Radiation Safety Act 2016 to be fit for purpose for managing radiation risk associated with naturally occurring radioactive material; if not, what amendments, if any, does he intend to make to it?

Answer
I am advised that the Radiation Safety Act 2016 provides a proportionate, risk based framework to protect people and the environment while allowing for safe and beneficial use, and the Director for Radiation Safety has advised that there is no immediate risk to health or the environment. I am advised that the Ministry of Health is developing guidance to support the management of radiation risks associated with naturally occurring radioactive material. An evaluation of this guidance once in use will inform any future consideration of legislative change.
