Question

  • Has he received any advice that KiwiRail is considering restructures, contractor reductions, or changes to maintenance delivery models as part of meeting the $200 million budget cut, if so, what documents or briefings did he receive on this issue, listed by title and date?

Rt Hon Winston Peters

Answer

No, KiwiRail is a State-Owned Enterprise and decisions regarding staffing levels are operational in nature. We expect KiwiRail to inform us of restructures prior to their occurrence and to set out a rationale. This includes demonstrating where staffing levels have exceeded a valuable input or are no longer aligned with customer demand or network need. We expect KiwiRail will engage affected staff in good faith on all restructure proposals, as every employer must, including finding opportunities for redeployment where available.
