Question

  • What was the process for determining the members of the Expert Advisory Group on Resource Management Reform?

Answered by

Hon Chris Bishop

Member for Hutt South · National Party · Minister responsible for RMA Reform

Answer

In August 2024, Cabinet agreed to objectives and principles to guide the replacement of the RMA and noted that the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) would establish the EAG. MfE provided an initial list to me of potential EAG members covering different discipline areas. Following direction from me on preferred candidates, MfE ran a conflict of interest process and the Secretary for the Environment appointed the members. The Terms of Reference for the EAG were proactively released and clearly state that "members will be selected based on their collective knowledge and expertise in the natural environment, urban and infrastructure, planning, law, economics, local government, and the Treaty of Waitangi" and "EAG members will participate in their individual capacity as subject matter experts, not as representatives of any organisations".
