How much research funding, if any, was committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2024?
Answered by
Hon Penny Simmonds
Member for Invercargill · National Party · Minister for Tertiary Education
Answer
I am advised by the Tertiary Education Commission that $1,837,353 was committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2024, allocated through the Performance Based Research Fund. From 2023, the Wānanga Research Capability fund was replaced with the Nga Whare Wananga fund that provides up to $24 million ($8 million per Wānanga) to be committed towards research capability, operational needs and aspirations of Wānanga.
