Answer

I recognise the important role that Wānanga and kaupapa Māori research can play in supporting mātauranga Māori, Māori learners and communities, and the wider tertiary education and research system. This is reflected in current funding through the Performance-Based Research Fund, with $1.54 million committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2026 to date. In addition, the Ngā Whare Wānanga fund provides up to $24 million, or $8 million per Wānanga, to support the research capability, operational needs and aspirations of Wānanga.
