Question

  • How much research funding, if any, has been committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2026 to date?

Answered by

Hon Penny Simmonds

Member for Invercargill · National Party · Minister for Tertiary Education

Answer

I am advised by the Tertiary Education Commission that $1,543,775 is currently committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2026, allocated through the Performance Based Research Fund. From 2023, the Wānanga Research Capability fund was replaced with the Nga Whare Wananga fund that provides up to $24 million ($8 million per Wānanga) to be committed towards research capability, operational needs and aspirations of Wānanga.
