What is the Minsiter’s understanding, if any, of the importance of Wānanga and Kaupapa Māori research, and how, if at all, is this reflected in the government’s current funding priorities?

Answer
Kaupapa Māori research and wānanga are important parts of New Zealand’s science, innovation and technology system and will remain important across the four priority pillars set out in the Science Investment Plan 2026-2036. The MBIE Vision Mātauranga policy continues to provide pathways for kaupapa Māori and wānanga-based research. This is a key, opportunity-based policy framework investing in Māori participation, capability and contribution within the science, innovation and technology system and seeks to unlock the potential of Māori knowledge, resources and people. Research proposals may incorporate kaupapa Māori research methodologies where these are relevant to the proposed research and align with the objectives and eligibility requirements of the relevant fund. Wānanga, as tertiary education institutions, remain eligible to apply for science, innovation and technology funding.
