Question

  • Does the Prime Minister support a precautionary approach to deep-sea mining in the Pacific and if not, why not?

Answered by

Rt Hon Christopher Luxon

Member for Botany · National Party · Prime Minister

Answer

New Zealand respects the rights of Pacific countries to manage their own stewardship responsibilities, consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). New Zealand supports the development of options towards a ‘Pacific approach’ to deep sea mining in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
