  • Following Reply 38343 (2026), what specifically was it about the issue of the water supply for Laghmor School exceeding the limit for nitrate in drinking water that made the Minister consider it "accurate" to describe as a "scare campaign"?

Answered by

Hon James Meager

Member for Rangitata · National Party · Minister for the South Island

Answer

The Minister for the South Island did not make those comments, but the local MP did, and he says it was accurate to describe the story as a "scare campaign" because it was a scare campaign, drummed up to denigrate LAGMHOR farming families by using fear rather than facts to make them think their children were unsafe.
