Question

  • Does the Minister of Finance stand by her statement of 27 August 2026 that the decision not to increase fuel tax merely needed to be formalised, and had Cabinet made that decision at the time the statement was made?

Hon Nicola Willis

List MP · National Party · Minister of Finance

Answer

I stand by my statement in the context in which it was made. A proposal to defer the planned 1 January 2027 fuel tax increase was considered by the Cabinet Economic Policy Committee on 26 August, with the specifics of that deferral then finalised at Cabinet on 31 August.
