Question

  • How, if at all, is New Zealand Food Safety “adapting our systems to meet increasingly complex supply chains” with regards to country of origin testing of imported food?

Answered by

Hon Andrew Hoggard

List MP · ACT Party · Minister for Food Safety

Answer

Country-of-origin testing is not routinely undertaken for imported food. The Consumer Information Standards (Origin of Food) Regulations 2021 require some foods to disclose origin information. These Regulations are administered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment. New Zealand Food Safety regularly monitors emerging international food safety risks and considers information about the supply chain when developing requirements for specific imported foods.
