Question

  • What measures, if any, are New Zealand Food Safety looking to implement for the way it manages food imports?

Answered by

Hon Andrew Hoggard

List MP · ACT Party · Minister for Food Safety

Answer

New Zealand Food Safety continually reviews the effectiveness of its imported food controls and considers whether changes are required as food safety risks, international supply chains and trading patterns evolve. Current work includes considering opportunities to strengthen oversight of the system, review requirements for foods categorised as high regulatory interest and detect food safety risks earlier. Any changes would be designed to ensure imported food continues to meet New Zealand's food safety and suitability requirements while maintaining a proportionate, risk-based approach.
