Has he received any feedback that the new levies approved by Cabinet in 2024 under the Food Act 2014 could make it harder for small businesses?

Answer
Yes. I have received feedback from some food businesses and sector representatives raising concerns about the cumulative costs of food regulation, including the Food Business Levy, and the impact of these costs on smaller businesses. These concerns were raised during consultation on the levy, and have subsequently been considered through both the Petitions Committee and Regulations Review Committee processes. New Zealand Food Safety is continuing to monitor the implementation of the Food Business Levy and gather feedback from businesses. This work will contribute to the statutory review of Food Act 2014 cost recovery required at least every three years.
