Answer

Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that it holds approximately 146 hectares of vacant land related to public housing nationally as at the end of June 2026. This compares to approximately 112 hectares in March 2025. The difference in the amount of vacant land is attributable to land being made available in the Large Scale Projects to enable delivery of social housing (that wasn’t included in the 112 HA) and where land is vacant due to homes being demolished as a result of fire or chemical events or significant weather events, or for redevelopment purposes.
