Answer
I am advised that a small group of offenders were responsible for a spike of dishonesty offending in the Kaeo area and contributing to a higher than the national average burglary rate. These offenders have been actively targeted by Police and this work has resulted in the following: • One offender has been charged with three burglaries and is awaiting sentencing in Kaikohe District Court on 15 September 2026. • One offender has been charged with 11 burglaries, failing to give identification, intentional damage, failing to stop, assaults Police, unlawful takes and theft. He is currently remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Kaikohe District Court on 6 October for case review. • One offender has been charged with four burglaries and three unlawful takes, he is awaiting sentencing in the Kaikohe District court on 16 November 2026. This group was likely assisted from outside the Kaeo area with two other known offenders who are facing a number of charges including receiving and burglaries. Significant work has been done through investigations to hold these offenders to account. Since this work by Police, events in the Kaeo area relating to burglaries and theft have significantly dropped.
