  • What is the backlog, if any, for superannuation applications as of 19/08/2026, and how does this compare to the backlog in the previous 5 years?

Answer

I am advised that the Ministry of Social Development does not define all outstanding New Zealand Superannuation applications as a backlog, as many people apply in advance of turning 65 years of age. As at 19 August 2026, there were 6,314 applications awaiting grant, of which 5,651 applicants (89.5 percent) had not yet reached eligibility age. I refer the Member to the attached table, which provides comparisons against 19 August of the previous five years.
