Answer

I am advised that on 27 July 2026, Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand commenced a consultation process with Firearms Safety Authority Police employees. However, as Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand had not yet been established as an agency of the Crown, and consultations with Police employees can only be undertaken by the Commissioner of Police, the consultation process was stopped with agreement from the Ministry of Justice. I am further advised that a new consultation document was released to staff on 19 August 2026, which is now led by Police and the Firearms Safety Authority.
