Question

  • Does the Minister agree with the statement of Environment Canterbury on their website that "Intensive land use, including agriculture, is a leading contributor to increasing nitrate concentrations in groundwater"?

Answered by

Hon Nicola Grigg

Member for Selwyn · National Party · Minister for the Environment

Answer

I acknowledge nitrate concentrations in groundwater have increased in some parts of the country. We now see the long-term effects of past decisions and practices in areas such as Canterbury and Southland. This Government’s focus is on fixing the system. In the new planning system, there will be limits for human health, better protection of drinking water sources through improved mapping, and ensuring the right incentives are in place so outcomes improve over time. Further, we have a complementary and dedicated water regulator in Taumata Arowai, with a system of drinking water standards that must be met after treatment, monitoring and enforcement. Most New Zealanders (85%) receive drinking water from registered public supplies, which are treated for pathogens and typically show low concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen.
