Does the Minister consider the addition of some 57,000 dairy cows to the Canterbury region since 1 January 2025 is consistent with reducing nitrate pollution problems in waterbodies in the region, including the pollution of Laghmor School's previously used drinking water bore supply?

Answer

I am aware of reporting of dairy expansion in Canterbury, and am also aware that there have been different estimates of the size of that expansion. The current resource management system is too complex and has not delivered the outcomes that New Zealanders expect. That is why the Government is committed to reforming the system and replacing the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). Bills that will replace the RMA include clear provisions for environmental limits to protect human health. These limits will need to prevent significant or irreversible harm to people and communities, and consider relevant health guidelines.
