Question

  • How, if at all, does Kāinga Ora prioritise people from Rotorua when placing new tenants in newly available Kāinga Ora properties in Rotorua?

Hon Tama Potaka

Answer

Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities advises me that the Ministry of Social Development assesses applicants' housing need and priority for social housing. When a suitable property becomes available, Kāinga Ora offers it to applicants whose requirements match the property, with those in the highest assessed need considered first. The Kāinga Ora Regional Placements Team works closely with MSD, Transitional Housing providers, and Emergency Housing providers to support housing outcomes for Rotorua whānau. Where a person living outside Rotorua is offered a home in the area, this is typically due to specific circumstances. For example, individuals may be returning to Rotorua to reconnect with family and support networks, relocating for safety reasons, or being matched to a specialised or accessible property where there is no local applicant whose housing needs align with that home.
