Question

  • Why are public officials, within organisations such as the Ministry of Health effectively investigating their own organisation regarding Wakari Hospital Ward 10A, rather than the independent NZ Police?

Answered by

Hon Paul Goldsmith

List MP · National Party · Minister for the Public Service and Digitising Government

Answer

I am advised that the Public Service Commissioner does not have a role in overseeing the investigative decisions of the NZ Police. The Ministry of Health has accepted the Ombudsman's recommendation to conduct an independent inquiry. The scope of this inquiry includes whether referral is necessary to the Health and Disability Commissioner if potential breaches of the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights have been identified, or to the NZ Police if there is suspected criminal conduct.
