Can the Minister confirm whether the average household in Queenstown generates approximately eight vehicle movements per day?

Hon Chris Bishop

Answer
I cannot confirm from the information available to me that the average household in Queenstown generates approximately eight vehicle movements per day as a measured Queenstown-wide average. However, under the Council’s Development Standards, each residential property is required to be assessed as generating 8 vehicle movements per day (two-way). I am advised that transport assessments for individual developments may use standard trip generation assumptions for modelling and design purposes, which are sensitivity tested using available local data to assess potential impacts. Those assumptions should not be treated as a confirmed measured average for all Queenstown households unless supported by local survey or model evidence. The Queenstown Strategic Transport Model is currently being built by the Way to Go partners, led by Queenstown Lakes District Council, along with NZTA and Otago Regional Council. Part of the scope of that project includes calculating trip generation using latest car ownership, population age bands and trip purpose data.
