Question

  • What, if any, representations have been made to him by members of his Caucus about the current regulations affecting rural contactors and what, if any, responses has he made to them?

Answered by

Hon Chris Bishop

Member for Hutt South · National Party · Minister of Transport

Answer

My Office and I regularly hear feedback, including from Caucus members on behalf of their constituents, around the regulation of heavy vehicles (including heavy agricultural vehicles). My response is as per my other public statements - the Government has a review of the Vehicle Dimensions and Mass (VDAM) Rule underway as part of its Land Transport Rule Reform Programme. The rule sets out the maximum permitted weight, width and length for vehicles operated on New Zealand’s roads. I recognise that the rule may be limiting the ability of agricultural businesses to improve their productivity. This is a longer-term piece of work that will continue into 2027. Any changes to size and weight limits could have significant implications for the maintenance of roading infrastructure and safety of road users. The Government must therefore carefully consider all the potential costs and benefits before making any changes.
