Question

  • How many individuals are required to re-enrol for the 2026 general election, broken down by reasons and by each electorate/roll?

Answered by

Hon Paul Goldsmith

List MP · National Party · Minister of Justice

Answer

I am advised that the Electoral Commission cannot confirm the number of electors who need to re-enrol for the 2026 General Election, broken down by reason, as this information is not collected when a person completes an application to enrol or update their enrolment details. There are however a number of reasons why electors may need to re-enrol including: • An elector who moves address to a different electoral district • Electors who have been placed on the dormant roll because their whereabouts is not known • Individuals who were removed from the dormant roll for a district after being on that dormant roll for three years • People who have been overseas who have been removed from the rolls because of the time they have been outside New Zealand without returning and no longer qualify, who return to New Zealand • Prisoners who have been removed from the rolls following a sentence of imprisonment who are released from prison
