Answer

The Ministry of Education completed an ethics assessment which included an algorithm assessment in November 2025 in relation to the SMART tool. No further algorithm impact assessments have been identified since 27 November 2023. No algorithm impact assessments have been done at The Education Review Office or Education New Zealand since 27 November 2023. I am advised that the New Zealand Qualifications Authority uses a supervised machine learning model to mark the Literacy Writing assessment. The model has undergone independent technical and statistical reviews to confirm that it is robust, reliable, and free from bias. These reviews were conducted by external third-party experts.
