Question

  • How many, if any, overweight permit or specialist vehicle permit applications for agricultural machinery have been declined in each of the past five years, and what were the reasons for those decisions?

Answered by

Hon Chris Bishop

Member for Hutt South · National Party · Minister of Transport

Answer

I am advised that the number of overweight permit or specialist vehicle permit applications for agricultural machinery that have been declined by NZTA in each of the past five years, as at 17 June 2026, is as follows: • 2021 – 0 • 2022 – 2 • 2023 – 6 • 2024 – 1 • 2025 – 33 • 2026 - 4 The above data only reflects applications that have been entered into NZTA’s application system to be processed. Some declined applications will not be captured in this data as they were declined before being recorded in NZTA’s application system, as requirements were clearly not met. Applications are declined because the requested operating weights exceed a vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) limits, the limits in the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016, or the relevant infrastructure limits on the specific route for the permit.
