What is the annual cost to the Crown of providing each ministerial self-drive vehicle, broken down by Minister, and what is the resulting cost per kilometre travelled?
Answered by
Rt Hon Christopher Luxon
Member for Botany · National Party · Minister responsible for Ministerial Services
Answer
The total annual cost for providing ministerial self-drive vehicles in FY 25/26 is $364,698.47. This figure is based on actual costs incurred during the year and is not indicative of the standard annual cost of providing ministerial self-drive vehicles, as costs may vary depending on vehicle usage and maintenance requirements. The total cost includes depreciation, fringe benefit tax (FBT), insurance, fuel, EV charging, road user charges (RUC), scheduled maintenance, repairs, vehicle registration, and monthly monitoring costs for EV chargers. The table attached sets out the cost attributable to each Minister. A cost per kilometre travelled cannot be provided. As noted in reply number 33907 (2026), odometer readings are not monitored in such a way as to make this information readily accessible.
