Question

  • When does the Minister expect digital driver licences to become available in the Govt.nz app's digital wallet, and how does that compare with the timeframe originally announced?

Hon Chris Bishop

Answer

NZTA has established a delivery team for the Digital Driver Licence (DDL) project and is targeting a limited pilot with the internal project team before the end of 2026. The pilot is expected to expand to a small group of external participants in the New Year. This phase will help test business readiness, user adoption, support arrangements, operational processes, and the overall user experience. In parallel, the Regulatory Systems (Transport) Amendment Bill introduces the concept of a DDL. Further secondary legislation is required before a DDL can be fully implemented. While NZTA is progressing implementation work at pace, the timing of a full rollout (including availability through the Govt app) will depend on the completion of the remaining legislative work.
