Question

  • What formal analysis, if any, has the Ministry undertaken comparing SMART results with teacher judgement, classroom evidence, e-asTTle, PATs, or other established assessment information?

Answered by

Hon Erica Stanford

Member for East Coast Bays · National Party · Minister of Education

Answer

I am advised by the Ministry of Education that the Student Monitoring, Reporting and Assessment Tool (SMART) results have not been directly compared with teacher informed decisions, classroom evidence, e-asTTle or Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs). SMART (like PATs) provides low-stakes assessments designed to support teaching and learning. Its purpose is to give teachers clear, reliable information about students’ progress. SMART supports teacher-informed decisions on student progress by providing point in time information twice a year to be used in conjunction with other forms of assessment, observation, and completion of learning tasks.
