MBIE can provide the total number of bond refund applications received during the relevant period via post or email. However, it cannot accurately report on how many were initiated by tenants as they do not collect or record this information as it is not required by the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA). The information required to answer this question may exist within individual application records. However, it is not held in a reportable format and would require a manual review of thousands of individual bond refund applications to determine who initiated each application. Accordingly, the Ministry cannot accurately report the number of bond refund applications initiated by tenants for the periods requested.
