Answer
While we are considering some form of tenure duration limits in social housing, the Government has not made decisions on this yet and I have directed officials to work with the sector to better understand the impacts of such limits. For some people, longer or lifelong tenure will still be appropriate. Improving mobility through the social housing system for those who are able to access private market housing will allow more people on the Social Housing Register who have a higher need for housing to be housed faster. With the changes we announced, social housing will still remain more affordable than private market rentals. The increase is part of a broader effort to make the system fairer and more sustainable, while still providing support to those who need it most. The fiscal savings from increasing income-related rent (IRR) are being re-invested to address cost-of-living pressures for low-to-middle income families in the private housing market.
