Question

  • What advice, if any, has the Minister received on whether the current postal voting system contains sufficient safeguards to detect and prevent electoral fraud?

Answered by

Hon Simon Watts

Member for North Shore · National Party · Minister of Local Government

Answer

As Minister of Local Government, I received advice that the mechanisms for identifying irregularities in an election are working as they should. In the case of irregularities in the Papatoetoe local board subdivision election, issues were raised appropriately under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and addressed by the courts.
