Question

  • What tools, steps or processes, if any, does NZDF use to evaluate the human rights implications of trainings and deployments?

Answered by

Hon Chris Penk

Member for Kaipara ki Mahurangi · National Party · Minister of Defence

Answer

The New Zealand Defence Force employs Human Rights Risk Assessments to manage potential human rights implications when conducting activities in or with foreign nations. In the event that a risk of potential human rights violation is identified, military planners will identify appropriate mitigations to determine if the risk can be managed, and will advise decision-makers of that determination.
