What consideration, if any, has the Government given to launching or supporting an independent investigation into the treatment of the New Zealand citizens who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla and were detained in May 2026, particularly in light of government action reportedly initiated by Australia, France, Spain, Malaysia and Türkiye in response to similar allegations made by their own nationals?

Will the Minister commit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade formally interviewing the New Zealand citizens who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla and were detained in May 2026 about their allegations of assault by the Israel Defense Forces, and if so, by what date?

Rt Hon Winston Peters

Answer
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade wrote to the three New Zealanders detained in May seeking further information on the treatment they experienced while in custody. None of the individuals have provided their consent for officials to make further representations.
