Answer

Early data collected by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) shows for the March 2026 quarter, 225 Project Information Memorandums (PIMs) for granny flats were processed by Building Consent Authorities. This is broadly in line with the Government’s expectations for this early phase of implementation. I am advised that there are some current limitations with data collection, but more complete reporting is expected as councils work to finalise their systems. Officials will continue to monitor uptake of the resource consent and building consent exemptions and publish PIM data on a quarterly basis on MBIE’s website.
