Question

  • Was the Teaching Council or its Chair involved in any way with the scoping or development of a potential review of Teacher Education Qualification Standards and if so, how were they involved?

Answered by

Hon Erica Stanford

Member for East Coast Bays · National Party · Minister of Education

Answer

The Ministry of Education led the scoping and development of the review of Initial Teaching Education (ITE) Programme Approval, Monitoring and Review Requirements. There has been no direct role for the Teaching Council Chair in the formal scoping or development of the review. The Ministry has held regular meetings with the Teaching Council as the regulator for the teaching profession, to ensure a smooth transition of the standards setting function from the Teaching Council to the Ministry of Education. This included sharing insights on the operation of current standards and their application in practice. During these meetings all teaching standards including the Initial Teaching Education Programme Approval, Monitoring and Review Requirements have been discussed.
