Answer
As part of the Government’s 2023 Fiscal Sustainability Programme and following the Release of Budget 2026, Customs has been required to deliver baseline savings through Budget 2024 and Budget 2026. I am advised that Customs is considering the implications of the next stage of the transformation programme announced in Budget 2026, including further baseline reductions for 2027/28 and 2028/29 onwards and the Government’s goal of reducing core public service full-time equivalents to 55,000 by June 2029. Savings to be delivered are set out in the attached appendix. These amounts have been removed from Customs’s baseline by the Treasury. In addition to the savings outlined in the attached appendix, Budget 2026 announced further savings of five per cent from 2027/28 onwards and another five per cent from 2028/29 onwards. These savings have not yet been removed from Customs’ baseline. I refer the Member to the Budget 2026 Summary of Initiatives (page 67) for details of Customs savings requirements as announced through Budget 2026.
