  • What specific performance targets, if any, exist for reducing timeframes for Family Court proceedings, and are these targets on track?

Hon Nicole McKee

Answer

The setting of performance targets for the courts is a matter for the judiciary. The Statement of Principles between the judiciary and the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry) acknowledges that responsibility for measuring court performance sits with the judiciary. I am advised the Ministry is working with the judiciary to support the implementation of a timely justice standard for Family Court proceedings. The proposed standard is based on disposal time thresholds for key case types. For most case types, separate thresholds have been proposed for defended and undefended applications, reflecting the differing timeframes typically required to resolve them.
