Answer

The Ministry of Education (the Ministry) currently reports student achievement based on a national study for Years 3, 6, and 8 across both for the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. In 2025, the Ministry introduced Te Tīrewa Mātai, New Zealand’s first national monitoring study focused on ākonga learning in te reo Māori at levels 1 – 2 immersion. This marks an important step in strengthening aromatawai, assessment and support within an evidenced understanding of progress and achievement in Kaupapa Māori and Māori-medium education. Māori student achievement in English-medium settings is reported through the Curriculum Insights Study, while Kaupapa Māori and Māori-medium achievement will be reported through Te Tīrewa Mātai, with the first year’s findings scheduled for release before the end of June 2026.
