Question

  • What is the approximate, maximum cost of each domestic dental training placement to the government, excluding additional student loans and allowance costs?

Answered by

Hon Dr Shane Reti

Answer

The Government does not specifically fund domestic dental training placements. Instead, the Government funds tertiary providers through tuition subsidies on an Equivalent Full Time Student (EFTS) basis; and this funding can be used to cover the cost of placements. The per-EFTS tuition subsidy for dentistry is $61,395 per annum, which does not reflect any additional costs to the Crown incurred through student loans, allowance costs, or Government spending on the final-year Fees Free scheme.
