Answer

I am advised by NZTA that, at this stage, heavy vehicle movements on the state highway network through Mosgiel make up around 3.4% of traffic on Gordon Road, which does not indicate a disproportionate volume. However, NZTA is aware of pressure on key intersections on State Highway 1 (SH1) and State Highway 87 (SH87) due to increasing traffic volumes associated with growth in Mosgiel. NZTA is currently developing an investment case to identify improvements that can reduce congestion, improve travel times, and better support freight movement. As part of this work, NZTA is focused on optimising the existing state highway network into and out of Mosgiel. As advised in my reply to Written Parliamentary Question 18556 (2026), this does not preclude consideration of a future heavy vehicle route if a need is identified and a case can be made to support it.
