Question

  • Is any action being taken, or statements being made in respect of the detention of Everlee Wihongi by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the United States?

Answered by

Rt Hon Winston Peters

List MP · NZ First · Minister of Foreign Affairs

Answer

While the New Zealand Government is unable to influence the immigration decisions of other governments, we can confirm the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the individual concerned. For privacy reasons, we cannot comment on the details of individual consular cases. Consular support for New Zealanders detained overseas includes ensuring that New Zealanders have access to legal representation, providing advice to family, and engaging with detention facilities where that is needed.
