Has the Government secured any agreements with fuel suppliers that grant New Zealand priority access to fuel shipments, if so, who?
Answered by
Hon Shane Jones
List MP · NZ First · Associate Minister for Energy
Answer
Fuel is supplied to New Zealand through commercial arrangements between fuel importers and their suppliers. The Government's role is focused on monitoring supply conditions, coordinating with industry under the National Fuel Plan, and supporting resilience through the minimum stockholding obligations. New Zealand is a member of the International Energy Agency, which acts as “insurance” against disruption to international energy supplies. New Zealand benefits from established trade relationships with key refining economies such as South Korea and Singapore.
